Natural patterns: Art inspired by particle physics on view in UMass exhibit
Art is not the antithesis of science — at least not the way artist Alicia Hunsicker does it. Hunsicker, 47, uses natural fractals, patterns that repeat over and over again on all scales, from tiny particles all the way out into the cosmos, to create her artwork. “Synergy,” a new exhibit on view through June 2 at the Science and Engineering Library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, is a collection of Hunsicker’s paintings and prints that explore the nature of the cosmos, and all life, through the lens of physics.

After Paris: The Fate of Study Abroad
On Friday, November 13, eight simultaneous terror attacks erupted across Paris killing 130 people. The day before, 43 people died in a suicide bombing in Lebanon. Ryan Adams combined Springsteen’s Americana style, his own rock and alternative-country flair, and Taylor Swift’s knockout “1989” album to create a poignant cover album, released on Sept. 25, that exposes the finer points of lyrics glossed over by Swift’s pop genre. With songs in the exact order they are heard in the original album, Adams stays as true to Swift’s vision as he can, while completely abandoning her ’80s inspiration.

Originally from a small town outside of Boston, I studied journalism and French at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. After a yearlong study abroad program in Lyon, France, I decided that was where I wanted to return and begin my career. Though trained in all journalistic formats, I prefer to focus on human interest, culture, and arts writing. Long-form writing is my strength, and I enjoy spending as much time with my subjects as possible to gain a fuller understanding of the world in which they live. I am also an avid runner, skier, and sailor, though my colleagues may tell you I spend an awful lot of time writing to music while downing my tenth cup of black tea.
